Then one day there was water running down the roof, or a wet spot on the ceiling, or the pool kept needing to be topped off. The homeowner called the company that put it in and found the number disconnected. Or the company answered but never came out. So someone closed the valves, the panels went quiet, and the pool went cold.
That is how a lot of Florida pool heating systems end up abandoned. Not because the panels are finished, but because a small leak showed up and nobody would climb up and fix it. A solar pool heater is a lot of plastic pipe and collector tubing carrying chlorinated water up to the roof, heating in the sun all day and cooling off every night. Over the years that cycle wears on the parts. Leaks tend to show up in a handful of familiar places:
Some of those are a quick fix. Others point to a panel that has reached the end of its useful life. Part of our job is telling you which is which, so you are not paying to patch something that will keep failing.
Many of the leaking pool systems we see were put in by a company that is out of business or will not come back. That does not matter to us. Request ServiceWe start by looking at the whole system, not just the wet spot. Water can travel along a roof or a header before it shows up anywhere you would notice. Our technicians check the collectors, the headers, the roof plumbing, the mounts and straps, and the equipment at the pool, then tell you what we found in plain language before any repair work starts.
Depending on what is leaking, a repair might mean plugging a damaged tube, replacing a coupling or clamp, reworking a section of roof plumbing, resealing a penetration, or swapping out a panel that cannot be saved. When we are done we run the system and watch it, so you can see it holding water and moving heat before we leave.
If more than one panel is worn, we will say so and explain your options. Sometimes a few new collectors are the smart move. Sometimes the rest of the system has years left in it and a targeted repair is all you need. See our page on solar pool panel replacement for how we think about that choice.
You do not need to get on the roof to learn a lot. Look for water or staining running down from the panels, a pool that needs more water than it used to, or damp spots on the ceiling under the collectors. At the pool equipment, look for drips around the solar valve and fittings.
If you see water on the roof and cannot reach us right away, many systems let you turn the solar loop off at the valve so water stops going up to the panels. If you are not sure how your valve works, call us first rather than guessing. Please do not climb onto the roof yourself. Wet collectors and wet shingles are slippery, and a fall is a much bigger problem than a leak.
Once we are on the roof, it makes sense to look at the rest of the system too. A worn strap, a sticking valve or a controller that is not reading the right temperature can all cost you heat without you knowing. We can do a full solar pool heater inspection during the same visit, clean the panels, and replace small worn parts so the system keeps doing its job.
Often, yes. Many leaks come from a small spot in a collector tube, a header connection or a coupling, and those can usually be repaired without replacing the whole panel. If a panel has several failures or the material has become brittle, replacing that one panel can make more sense. We will tell you which applies after we look at it.
The panels and plumbing heat up in the sun and cool down at night, every day, for years, while carrying chlorinated pool water. That cycle wears the plastic parts, fittings and clamps over time. Leaks at the panels, the header joints and the roof plumbing are the most common causes we see.
If water is coming off the roof, turning the solar loop off at the valve usually stops water from going up to the panels until someone can repair it. Valves differ between systems, so call us if you are unsure. Please stay off the roof.
