It’s true — if you install solar first, then replace your roof, you’ll have to pay for the panels to be removed, stored safely, and reinstalled. That’s more work than the original install, and it isn’t cheap. We do this work for over ninety roofers in the area. This possible expense is a valid concern.
If you’re already getting roof quotes or dealing with a current leak, yes — wait until after your new roof is on. If a roofer needs access, you don’t want panels in the way.
But what if your roof still has 5–10 years left? Should you delay? Maybe… but let’s look at the numbers.
The Math
The average Florida power bill is about $160 a month. In recent years, Florida utilities have raised rates by around 10% annually — some years higher, some lower. To stay conservative, let’s use 5% yearly increases in this example.
Here’s what that means:
• Year 1: $168
• Year 2: $176.40
• … and so on until Year 30: $691.51
Over 30 years, you will have spent over $130,000 on electricity — and $76,340 of that is just rate increases.
That $76,340 is enough to:
• Pay for your solar system
• Buy a battery backup
• Remove & reinstall panels a couple of times
• And still have money left for your new roof
And that’s without factoring in the extra savings once your solar loan is paid off.

Why 30 Years?
• Most top-tier solar panels have a 30-year production warranty
• Solar financing is often available in 30-year terms
• Mortgages are usually 30 years. It’s the industry standard for evaluating lifetime value.
“But I Won’t Be Here in 30 Years…”
If you sell your home, solar increases resale value and often helps it sell faster.
If you pass it on, the next owner — whether family or buyer — benefits from years of free energy. Either way, it’s an asset.
Bottom Line
The sooner you install solar, the sooner it starts paying for itself — and freeing up your budget for that roof, or a boat, car, college fund, kitchen remodel… anything.
Solar is a purchase with a return on investment, not just an expense.
Caveats:
Not every home is solar-feasible. Financing terms affect ROI.
