Solar pool heating works differently from the photovoltaic panels you might have seen on roofs. Instead of generating electricity, solar collectors absorb heat from the sun and transfer it to your pool water. The system includes collectors, usually mounted on your roof or a nearby structure, plus a control valve and plumbing that circulates water through the collectors and back to your pool. Solar collectors are typically dark, flat panels or tube arrays mounted on a south-facing roof or rack. Water from your pool pump circulates through these collectors, absorbs heat from the sun, and returns to the pool. A control valve and sensor manage when water flows through the collectors—usually during sunny hours. On cloudy days or at night, the system stops circulation to avoid heat loss.
Your pool size, how often you use it, and how warm you want the water all determine the number of collectors you need. Roof space, roof pitch, and sun exposure matter too. Northern and central exposures work better than west-facing roofs. The installation cost includes the collectors, plumbing connections, control equipment, mounting hardware, and permits.
We mount the collectors, run plumbing connections to your pool pump, install the control valve and sensor, and test the whole system. Permits and inspections are handled as part of the job. Once installed, solar pool heating systems need occasional cleaning and occasional check-ups on the valve and connections.

Solar collectors work on sunny winter days, but less effectively than summer because the sun is lower and days are shorter. Many pool owners use solar heating in spring through fall, then switch to a backup heater or close the pool in winter.
